The War of the Three Henrys, (1587-89), was the last of the Wars of Religion in France fought between the moderate King Henry III, the Roman Catholic Henri I de Lorraine, and the Huguenot leader Henry of Navarre. The war began when the Catholic League convinced King Henry III to issue an edict outlawing Protestantism, annulling Henry of Navarre's right to the throne. With the support of England’s Queen Elizabeth I, Henry of Navarre won the Battle of Coutras in 1587. Henry III had Henri I de Lorraine murdered in 1588 and open war erupted. Henry III was murdered in 1589 and Henry of Navarre became king as Henry IV.
