Tallahassee is the capital of Florida and seat of Leon County. Tallahassee was chosen as capital in 1824 because it was roughly in the middle of the two previous capitals: Saint Augustine on the Atlantic and Pensacola on the Gulf of Mexico. Tallahassee is home to two major universities. Florida State University was established in 1851 and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, a historically black university, was established in 1887. The Museum of Florida History, Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science, and the city’s oldest building, the Columns (1830), are notable tourist attractions. Tallahassee is located northwest of the Apalachicola National Forest.
