Sudan is an East African country located to the south of Egypt. Its capital, Khartoum, is in the basin where the White Nile and the Blue Nile meet. Port Sudan, located on the coast of the Red Sea, is a trade, fishing and tourism center providing access to the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean. The southern part of the country is mountainous and the Sahara Desert covers one quarter of its northern territory. With the separation of South Sudan in 2011, it lost most of its oil reserves. Among its most important historical are the Nubian Pyramids, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
