Semarang is a city in Indonesia, and the capital of the Central Java Province. Semarang has a storied history, and was once known as Bergota in the ninth century. Under colonial rule, the Dutch started tobacco plantations and constructed transport links in the city. This made Semarang a major trading outpost that was well connected to other cities in Java. Today, most of Semarang’s well-preserved Dutch architecture can be found in the old town, which is also aptly nicknamed "Little Netherlands” by the locals. In addition, Semarang has been crowned as the cleanest tourist destination in Southeast Asia by the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard.
