Sana’a is Yemen’s largest city and the center of Sanaa Governorate. With a population of over 3,900,000, it is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Sana’a is situated at an elevation of over 2,300 meters, which makes it one of the most-elevated capital cities in the world. The city borders the Sarawat Mountains of Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb and Jabal Tiyal. Sana’a’s unique style of architecture, most prominently expressed in its geometrically decorated multi-story buildings, makes it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to a popular urban myth, the city was established by Shem, the son of the biblical figure Noah.
