Salinas is a city in Monterey County, California, in the US. It is located outside the southern part of the Greater Bay Area and 16 kilometers southeast of the mouth of the Salinas River. Salinas serves as the main business, governmental and industrial center of the region, and has a vibrant agricultural industry that consists of flower cultivation, wine making, and agriculture. The city is hence known as the ‘Salad Bowl of the World.’ Additionally, it was the hometown of writer and Nobel laureate John Steinbeck (1902-1968) who set many of his stories in Salinas Valley and Monterey County.
