Edson Arantes do Nascimento (born 1940) – better known as Pelé – is a former Brazilian footballer who is widely viewed as one of the greatest football players in history. Born in the town of Três Corações in Minas Gerais, PELÉ took his nickname from his mispronunciation of his favorite player, Bilé. Pelé started his career as a 15-year-old for Santos in 1956. Two years later, he starred for the national team as Brazil won its first World Cup in Sweden. Pelé would later win two more World Cups with Brazil, in 1962 and 1970. At the turn of the millennium, Pelé, along with Diego Maradona, was named FIFA Player of the Century.
