Owen Arthur (1949-) is a Barbadian politician and former Prime Minister of Barbados. In 1983, he was named to the Barbados Senate and the following year he was elected to the Barbados House of Assembly. In 1993, Arthur was chosen as Leader of the Opposition on behalf of the Barbados Labour Party. As leader, he led the Labour Party to victory in the 1994 general election. He served as Prime Minister from 1994 to 2008 and was the longest serving prime minister in the country’s history. He continued to serve in parliament until he resigned his seat in 2018.
