Newcastle upon Tyne, often just called Newcastle, is located on the north bank of the Tyne River, in England. The city was named after the “New Castle” built by the Duke of Normandy Robert Carhouse. St. James Stadium and the Quayside Bridge are the main symbols of the city. The University of Newcastle is an important public research center. The Great Northern Museum, Discovery Museum, and the Antique Museum are important art centers. The Animals, one of the memorable early rock bands, were from in this city. One of the world's largest half marathons, the “Great North Run” has been held in Newcastle since 1981. Newcastle is known for its sporting activities: football, basketball, rugby and ice hockey.
