Mississippi is a southeastern state in the US that borders the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River. The state’s capital and largest city is Jackson. The area was noted for its complex agricultural societies that predated the arrival of Europeans. Originally settled by French colonists, Mississippi passed to the US after the Revolutionary War. It was admitted as a state in 1817 and largely developed around slave plantations and cotton production. The state was a founding member of the Confederacy. Mississippi was the site of several prominent events during the Civil Rights Movement. The Mississippi River Delta region contributed significantly to the development of blues music.
