Jaffa, or Yafo in Hebrew, is one of the oldest ports in the world, out of which the modern city of Tel Aviv has since grown. The two urban areas merged in 1950 to become Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Located in southern Israel on the Mediterranean, Jaffa is a real melting pot of Jewish and Arab populations. It is associated with various myths and legends and it is said to be from here that Jonah set sail before being swallowed by a whale. The flea market is a key site and the narrow streets are lined with art galleries and craft shops. Jaffa is also historically renowned for its oranges.
