Haiti is a Caribbean country, sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Its capital is Port-au-Prince. Christopher Colombus set foot on the island during his first transatlantic voyage in 1492. The state of Haiti was born in 1804, out of the first and only successful slave rebellion in history. It is the first country in the western hemisphere to have abolished slavery and the first black republic in the world. It possesses the longest coastline inn the Caribbean after Cuba and 70% of its shores remain untouched. Haiti has a rugged landscape and counts “Citadella Laferrière Castle” as well as the Labadie port as its main touristic destinations. It is also the only country in the world to have Voodoo as an official religion.
