When the French Revolution first began, other European powers remained uninvolved. But once revolutionaries captured the French king and queen, the Hapsburg Austrians and Prussia attempted to invade France. After setbacks in 1793, the French armies expanded into the Hapsburg Netherlands and Italy. Austria and Prussia surrendered, ending the War of the First Coalition. In 1789 Napoleon invaded Egypt, beginning the War of the Second Coalition against Russia, Austria and Great Britain. In 1802 the French were victorious again. These wars helped to spread revolutionary ideals throughout Europe and set the stage for the Napoleonic Wars.
