Depok is a city in Indonesia, and part of the Jakarta Metropolitan Area. It is one of the largest cities in West Java. The city’s name was likely derived from an acronym a Dutch trader gave to a local church he started in the area. Nevertheless, majority of Depok’s current residents are Muslims, as the original Christian dwellers had fled during the Indonesian National Revolution in the 1940s. Depok retains many of its colonial landmarks, which are found in an area known as Old Depok. There are also several shopping malls and traditional bazaars in the city, including the Pasar Depok Baru and Pasar Depok Lama.
