Dammam is the capital of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. It is the largest city in the Eastern Province, and the sixth-largest in all of Saudi Arabia. The judicial and administrative bodies of the province, along with several key government departments, are located in the city center. Dammam doubles as a major administrative center for the Saudi oil industry. The city is growing at an exceptionally fast rate of 12 percent per year, the fastest in the entire Arab world. The King Fahd International Airport, which serves Dammam and the surrounding metropolitan area, is the largest airport in the world in terms of total area.
