The Battle of Verdun was a turning point in the First World War. It was the longest battle of the war, beginning on February 21,1916 and ending on December 18, 1916, and the longest battle in human history to date. The German Empire sought to take over the strategically important fortified region of Verdun in France. For nearly a year, the French and German armies captured and recaptured the area, with heavy casualties on both sides. In the end, the French recaptured the territory that the Germans had taken. The total losses to both sides numbered almost one million.
