BALZERS

It is claimed that the area where Balzers and Mäls were located, in the south of Liechtenstein, was called Palazole in the ninth century. The Burg Gutenberg, or the Gutenberg Castle, is a historic icon located on a hill in the center of the city. It is one of the five castles of the principality, and also now serves as a museum. The headquarters of Oerlikon Balzers, of the international technology company Oerlikon Group, is located here. The Balzers Operetta, a national tradition staged annually, is an important cultural event. Olympic athlete and cross-country skier Xaver Frick was born here.
