Amersfoort is a city in the Netherlands, close to the historical city of Utrecht. Archaeological findings suggest Amersfoort’s history dates back to the Mesolithic era. In medieval times, however, Amersfoort was a major textile center. Today, the city is an important railway junction, as it lies along the Netherlands’ main railway routes. It also houses many prominent global companies, as well as the headquarters of several nongovernmental organizations and political parties. The city’s top attractions include DierenPark Amersfoort – a local zoo – as well as the Mondriaan House, where renowned Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan was born.
